Do you already have the subtitles in the language of your choice? In
that case, many players will be able to display the subtitles when
playing the movie. Try mplayer with the -sub option.
Unless you plan on watching the film on a standalone hardware player,
you do not really have to encode the subtitles into the film.
If you really want to do that, you can use mencoder (installed as part
of mplayer, if you compile from sources)
