This might not suit but I do it this way:

Plug in your camera, or have your camera plugged in when you boot:

Using <blkid> as root - discover the UUID="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" of the camera and 
make a suitable entry into your /etc/fstab file:

UUID=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx  /cam            vfat    rw,user,noauto  0       0

Plug your camera in whenever you have photos to remove from it
<mv> or <cp> them to the directory you want on your hard drive and work on 
them there with Gimp.
