This is why I don't use a login manager (like [kwxg]dm); as long as the system doesn't switch to a graphical VT (or is it any VT?), you're able to Shift-PgUp/Dn through the boot messages after logging in.

Since booting up is a rare thing, the extra step of typing "startx &" to get X started is an extremely minimal price to pay for living without a graphical login manager.
