I can't answer except from personal experience.  The former Lucent now
Agere chipset seems well supported by the Martian Modem driver in
Non-free.  I have Thinkpads 390e and T23 with that chipset and nary a
problem.  I know they're quite old by now.

Several years ago I had used a T42 with another chipset that was
supported by the HSF modem, I believe.  The author required $10 for a
code to run at higher than 14.4 kbps.  That was a bit of a pain but it
worked well enough.

I don't even know if analog modem functionality is included in new
laptops.  We have some T60s at work and I'm not sure about them or the
new Dells.  Even PCMCIA card slots may become a thing of the past. 
Does anyone make a USB modem?
