The former Lucent now Agere chipset seems well supported by the Martian Modem driver in Non-free. I have Thinkpads 390e and T23 with that chipset and nary a problem. I know they're quite old by now.
Several years ago I had used a T42 with another chipset that was supported by the HSF modem, I believe. The author required $10 for a code to run at higher than 14.4 kbps. That was a bit of a pain but it worked well enough. I don't even know if analog modem functionality is included in new laptops. We have some T60s at work and I'm not sure about them or the new Dells.
