I don't think that 44 °C is too high a temperature for a hard disk.
How do you come to your different assumption?
What are the exact specifications for your disk?
What does smartctl (from smartmontools) tell you?

If you'd want to reduce the temperature of the disk, I'd try to increase
the airflow aroud the disk in the first place.
