Surely, in part at least, that's rocketing price is to coerce the
customer into upgrading to newer hardware.  IOW, the maintenance cost
increase is artificial.

Nowadays, probably. Back in the day (10-15-20 years ago), vendors kept large stocks of old parts, and FEs could actually repair this stuff.
