You should have only one disk to boot from, which is the one with which you install the system on your computer. The other DVDs are probably not bootable. What happens when you mount these DVDs? Are there files on them? > but how can i make my debian machine to > understand the remaining media? Run dselect and select "Access", then "cdrom" from the list: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ * 0. [A]ccess Choose the access method to use. 1. Installation from a CD-ROM containing a Debian distribution. The CD-ROM may be or not be mounted already; it should contain a standard ISO9660 CD-ROM filesystem. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Once you selected cdrom (that should work with DVDs, but I never tried that), you will be asked to insert the disks. You need to make all the DVDs you have known to the system this way. There are lists on each DVD that tell the system which packages are on this DVD. After reading these lists, the system will know what is available and let you select the packages you want to install. > if debian-update-4.0r5-amd64-DVD-1.iso alone is sufficient to > install debian in a machine, why don't debian provider rename > remaining file names as optional or with any other name which > doesn't confuse anyone? http://www.debian.org/distrib/ clearly lists the available options. Installing Debian is a first step for which not so much software is required. But the more software you want to be able to choose from, the more DVDs you need to burn. If nothing went wrong with burning the DVDs, there is lots of software on the DVDs, only your computer doesn't about them yet because you didn't make it read the package lists from the DVDs.
