Do you think that your volume descriptors got hosed? The main LVM diagnostic commands are: pvs, pvscan, lvscan, pvscan, pvdisplay, lvdisplay, vgdisplay When you remake your LVM, you may want to use vgcfgbackup to save your volume descriptors... I re-read your original post. Are you saying that your problem is that you don't have a /sbin/fsck.ext4? It looks like this is packaged in e2fsprogs 1.41.3-1 (in lenny).
