well, supergrubdisk worked; I'm now booting (via floppy) a system from my SATA drives. And now that it boots, I can upgrade the copy of the system on the new drives to lenny. For those reading this note, please note that the supergrubdisk website seems to be moving to supergrubdisk.org. Sometines I found wili pages at http://stmaarten.globat.com/~supergrubdisk.org/index.php; other times at the new site.
