Remember what I said about Desktop Environments? Network Manager with hal is part of a desktop environment. Its fitzing with the drives. Your kernel is seeing the drive, assigning it to /dev/sda (around 19:37). A couple of minutes later (19:39:35) something causes the drive to abort.
