This is a Debian list, so support or lack thereof for other OSes is not really relevant. I'm using a 686-bigmem kernel (on an amd64 CPU) and am quite happy with it. Maybe PAE is a bit of a hack from a technical point of view, but then so is the 686 instruction set, the USB protocol, ...
