if the package is bootsplash related, it probably has changed some options in your grub menu, triggering "update-grub". So I would start by looking into /boot/grub/menu.lst . Regarding the boot process, where does it stop ? After the grub menu, before ? What is the package ? Splashy, grub-splashimages... From Debian or not ?
