You should only need the first DVD or the first two or three CDs to install a fully working system with X and apps. If you have a fast network connection, then the small netinst CDs will do. If you're away from the net and need hard copy CDs, get someone to use jigdo to build the "missing" images and burn them to physical disk for you. For most people, that would be a waste - especially if that amounts to making and storing an additional 27 CDs / extra 4 DVDs per Debian architecture.
