I remember seeing a similar thing (also in the context of rsync, by the
way), and I remember it took me a while to figure out how to fix it, and
I also remember that I fixed it without fsck (and that fsck didn't
help).  I do not OTOH remember exactly how I fixed it, but I seem to
remember it had to do with using chmod and/or chown on it (as root,
obviously).  Of course, the funny name with weird bytes in it makes it
that much more interesting, since you typically can only refer to it
via wildcards.
