Until I can get something else on the level of an nvidia, I am stuck with this
old clunker. I have installed the required firmware-linux and mga-vid which is
recommended for video viewing with this card.

Problem: Any attempt at DRI freezes system. This may be a bug in the firmware
after being taken out of the kernel driver because it worked in 2.6.28
kernels. (Firmware which is nonfree was separated out in 2.6.29.)

Problem: Attempts to play video (wmv) crash vlc and xine. Mplayer will run but
video does not show.

I tried modprob the matroxfb_base (which modprobes all the others) and then
the mga-vid (which will segfault without the matroxfb_ modules). The matroxfb_
stuff makes the console go funny but doing anything else, i.e. switching to an
X session or modprobing the mga-vid recovers). With all this stuff loaded,
choosing the mga-scale backend, mplayer still shows no video. With or without
the fb stuff, I can get thumbnails off the CD.

What am I doing wrong?
How should the init scripts be done to correctly load the modules without
untoward side effect?
Any solution to the DRI problem?
