I had the exact same problem when I moved from Lenny to testing/unstable - ping worked, but traceroute, lynx, etc. could not resolve domain names. After much head scratching, I came up with the same solution as you did. (My "router" is a Thomson SpeedTouch 510 DSL modem/gateway.)
