I don't know about 1-3. Regarding 4, I've seen lenny fail to load the video modules. If you enter: aptitude search vesa do you get a line like: i A xserver-xorg-video-vesa - X.Org X server -- VESA display driver You probably won't see the 'i' at the beginning of the line, which indicates that the vesa module is installed.
