I have such an error on starting of glxgears:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
How can I fix it?

Are you, by chance, using the proprietary nvidia driver? If so, you will
probably need to reinstall it.
Stuff like that happens to me if I update the kernel, and forget to reinstall
the nvidia driver afterwards.
