The first message is probably "Setting up ALSA". In any case, the issue described concerns only the levels of "Master". All other levels, such as "Speaker" or "PCM" are properly restored. I start suspecting that smth mutes "Master" after the correct levels are loaded (perhaps Xfce's mixer?).
