Found vga=ask no longer exists in grub2. Eliminated vga from the command line and system booted font size 16 instead of 8. While vga was in the command line it was set to a number I don't remember, something like vga=715. With this setting when dpkg-reconfigure console-setup was run it finished with a message consolechars can only set the font size to 8. Now when dpkg-reconfigure console-setup is run it announces the system was booted up with font size 16. Very readable.
