I read some blurbs and articles about work with zinc-air. Apparently, some of the problems with zinc-air have been solved. Zinc-air is known to have an energy density about twice that of lithium, but is still much safer. Zinc is also more abundant and cheaper than lithium. A very good and almost-completely-untapped-thus-far source for lithium is in South America, and the zinc-air design is still to be proven, so I wouldn't count lithium out yet, however.
