Thanks for the suggestion. I found the old icons at ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/gnome-icon-theme/2.28/gnome-icon-theme-2.28.0.tar.bz2 What I did was to copy /usr/share/icons/gnome to /usr/share/icons/gnome_2.28 then overwrote the icons in that with the old ones.
