Hardware RAID implementations are absolutely _NOT_ standardized. Each vendor uses a proprietary method different from others. Rip the Smart2 controller from your Compaq server and drop in an IBM ServeRAID card, and report how that goes. Do the same ripping a 3Ware card out of a system and replace it with an LSI Logic MegaRAID card. None of these scenarios will work. Mike is dead on the money.
