The driver will determine what sort of interface is presented. If no driver picks up the device, no interface will be created. If it's a disk, you'll get /dev/sdx; a webcam, perhaps /dev/video; a WLAN dongle, perhaps wlan0 (all assuming that your kernel has a driver that recognizes the device).
