The reason is that "a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present…", namely the nouveau module which is new in 2.6.32-5. You need to blacklist it (see modprobe.conf(5) and reboot to get rid of it. If you had used the Debian packages this would not have happened, because the nvidia-kernel-common package blacklists nouveau for you.
