ok, I think I've gotten myself just about totally confused, but I might even
be CLOSE.... to getting it right.
I have dovecot working & running:
ps -ef|grep dovec
root 6867 1 0 Aug16 ?
00:00:04 /usr/sbin/dovecot -c /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf
root 6875 6867 0 Aug16 ? 00:00:01 dovecot-auth
root 6876 6867 0 Aug16 ? 00:00:01 dovecot-auth
root 6881 6867 0 Aug16 ? 00:00:00 dovecot-auth -w
root 6882 6867 0 Aug16 ? 00:00:00 dovecot-auth -w
dovecot 6913 6867 0 Aug16 ? 00:00:00 pop3-login
dovecot 6915 6867 0 Aug16 ? 00:00:00 pop3-login
dovecot 14302 6867 0 14:50 ? 00:00:00 imap-login
dovecot 14307 6867 0 14:50 ? 00:00:00 imap-login
dovecot 14310 6867 0 14:50 ? 00:00:00 imap-login
pbc 14607 11248 0 14:54 pts/1 00:00:00 grep dovec
dovecot 17965 6867 0 Aug16 ? 00:00:00 pop3-login

I even have squirrelmail working. There are 2 messages in Squirrelmails Sent
folder ( test messages) and I see them:
p...@paulandcilla:~/Maildir/.Sent$ ls -l cur
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 pbc pbc 566 Jan 17 2010
1263737571.M696941P13873V0000000000000807I00AC4FB7_0.mail.pcartwright.com,S=566:2,S
-rw-r--r-- 1 pbc pbc 703 Jan 24 2010
1264355600.M907795P6907V0000000000000807I00AC4DBF_0.mail.paulandcilla.homelinux.org,S=703:2,S

I have a Maildir account in Kmail setup, but in the Sent folder there are 12
messages. Isn't squirrelmail supposed to keep its mail in my Maildir folder?
what am I missing?
With all of this setup, I think what your original question was about using my
laptop to get to my IMAP account here, shouldn't it work?
