I have never deleted hd4 It still works and can boot into etch but can't mount hda2 or hda3 even though they start and end at their old places It complains:
FAT: bogus number of reserved sectors VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev hda2. I have tried testdisk It warns that the current number of heads per cylinder is 16, but the correct value may be 255 Thanks to all those who reply!
