I did not. I didn't do the wireless-tools app.. or the modprobe -r;modprobe
I think I did that part backwards ( stumbling around..)

that worked!!! it must be this part that I didn't do:
modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200

now I can install Debian on my laptop!
