Your complaint is exactly the same as a local friend of mine, a long-time Linux user who also used a T42 for a long time. He actually retrofitted a tall screen onto a (I believe) T61, which he runs at 2000xsomething. I'll forward your e-mail to him so he can respond with instructions, if he wants.
