Yes, that helps; thanks Camaleón. After a little searching, I concluded that the problem was unicode. Then I discovered the Debian package uni2ascii, which helps -- but still leaves me with some coding to convert with search-and-replace. I have been installing the NOMULE version of XEmacs.
