Results in inability to upgrade any packages on the system.
Anyone come across this and know how to fix? or is a system re-install needed?

Hi,
I have the same problem but with 'desktop-file-utils' and fighting him
for some time on my Squeeze box (other Squeeze box is fine).
What was working for me is deleting block inside /var/lib/dpkg/available
where was mentioning old VirtualBox versions.
Now I have VirtualBox 4 so I was delete in /var/lib/dpkg/available all
previous version of VirtualBox.
Before doing that back up /var/lib/dpkg/available just in case
somethings go wrong.
That solve my problem with 'error in Version string
2.1.4-42893_Debian_lenny': invalid character in revision number'
but 'E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)' is still here.
apt-get purge, apt-get install, dpkg -i desktop-file-utils wasn't
helpful on the end it's always 'E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an
error code (2)'
I think it is possible to solve it without re installation; just didn't
found solution yet :-)
