This has happened many times in the 16 years I've been running Debian. A stable release means lots of upheaval for a while. Indeed, the best thing for us mere users is to wait a week or so, then check again to see if things are resolved. One more reason NEVER to do automatic package updating. Always sanity check what apt wants to do, BEFORE it does it.
