Dell 8100s behave badly probing a certain port range. Comment out the
line in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts that looks like this:

include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0x800-0x8ff, port 0xc00-0xcff

and add in this line:

include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0xc00-0xcff

You will need to do this in single user mode, or using a kernel that
doesn't have the pcmcia modules (so the cardmgr can't start up).  I
found this solution at http://www.linux-on-laptops.com.
