Thanks for the tip. 

The camera is now a Microsoft (R) LifeCam NX-6000 as /dev/video0.
>From the description in aptitude, luvcview is the most capable of 
the two programs.  The following is from two cases.  The first gives 
a nice video.  The second, where I tried to specify smaller and 
legitimate video dimensions, gives a segmentation fault.

I'm imagining that Skype might work with a smaller resolution. 
Any suggestions to achieve that without a fault.
