I may get hate-mail for saying this, but I don't recommend Debian as your first distro. Assuming you have enough RAM (at least 512 MB, preferably 1 GB or more), I recommend Linux Mint. It's known for being user-friendly and accomodating to Windows users.
If you don't have enough RAM for Linux Mint, I recommend Puppy Linux or antiX Linux. Of these two distros, antiX Linux is easier to install while Puppy Linux has a better default setup. Try both and see which one you like better. Once you are comfortable with Linux, you'll be in a much better position to try Debian. Switching from one Linux distro to another is MUCH easier than switching from Windows to Linux. In fact, there are even distro hoppers out there who change distros on a regular basis.
