Debian ports[1] is a repository for machine architectures which are not
yet officially supported by Debian. Unless you are running Debian on
relatively exotic hardware, you probably don't need it. Are you sure the
email didn't mention 'backports' instead?

GDM 2 is still available in squeeze (as the package gdm), so at least
you are not forced to upgrade or switch to a different display manager
yet.
