Has your CPU governor changed, perhaps, to something more 'twitchy'? Try: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor If this returns "ondemand", for example, the CPU will jump to a higher frequency more readily than, say "conservative".
