Probably not. The last I read on the issue MS changed their protocols (again) so alot of stuff like audio/webcam isn't working anymore. This happened sometime after amsn's last release... and that was late 2010. Not the most authoritative but someone's complained, http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/index.php?topic=8292.0
It's very difficult asking people to switch something they've had a hard (or long) time learning, but try to get your mom on something that's more open than skype. Cause call me crazy but I don't doubt this type of thing will stop in the proprietary world any time soon.
