Maybe you can modify in /etc/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver* the value of the newLoginCommand parameter. xdm man page warns though of its difficulties to manage properly multiple window systems (see the Limitations section) and recommends to use xinit. So something like xinit launching xdm as the newLoginCommand could do the trick...
