Having done all that, I installed the stable (squeeze) version on the second half (unused) of my hard disk. Everything worked fine, and I did a force-upgrade to testing. The only problem was that I had to delete openoffice and install libreoffice. Everything works fine which suggests that my problem is with the installer program.
