I had a similar problem when I found out Gnome 3 Nautilus didn’t behave at all like Nautilus 2 – using snapshot.debian.org, I was able to reinstall Nautilus 2 (together with Evince and Brasero, I think) and now I can happily continue using it together with an otherwise up-to-date XFCE. I would assume that adding a pre-Gnome-3-Link for snapshot.debian.org to your sources.list and then manually reinstalling all the necessary components would do the trick. However, you won’t get any more patches/updates for it, obviously.
