now you have decided to install this - it usually installs with the free
xorg driver, so you must have caused the bug by installing the ati
non-free. It's tricky but working well, I've configured many pc's and
notebooks with ati

Did you remove the xorg.conf now? Or what is there ... in /etc/X11?
Also did you ever look into he logs in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
