Are you saying that the gnome automounting thingy looks in /etc/fstab?
I have my usb hard drive in /etc/fstab thusly: /dev/sdc1/ /mnt/backup ext3 user,noauto,rw 0 0 When I plug it in, it is automounted (at /media/...)
