I tried everything, including creating a new pure squeeze vm on my server to test, but nothing worked. Except using Brother's ppd. Now my printer is printing as fast as ever, and I also got a bunch of new options to configure it in cups. So all is well under the rain, sorry for the noise, I should have tried that much earlier but frankly I didn't believe in that solution.
