You can get the best of both worlds with an OpenWrt installation on a firmware based device: full blown linux, fully customizable - you can install any linux based firewall software you want - but with the same low power consumption and small physical footprint of firmware based units. What you may lose out on, though, is ease of use: the flashing and configuration can take some getting used to.
