Perhaps I am mistaken, or was just unclear -- sorry. By "the xserver" I mean xserver-xorg, not the xserver drivers you mention (dang my colloquially-inclined rural Southern hide). :) Try "sudo aptitude show xserver-xorg", see if it's installed or not...
