You can have a 64 bit kernel and a 32 bit userland. What is the output of # dpkg --print-architecture ? I suspect that only 64 bit VirtualBox runs on 64 bit kernels, but I am not sure about that. In any case, you should easily be able to install a 32 bit kernel (though you might not be able to trivially use all your memory if you do so).
