A hardware problem is starting to be the first thing I would discard. The symptons you are facing are not normal for a system that has not updated any package nor installed nothing new recently... Consider also a full computer clean-up (I mean, the kind of job that involves opening the case and remove all the dust ;-) ) and also perform a hard disk SMART test (better if you use the tool provided by the disk manufacturer).
