If you are short of memory, you don't actually need to waste the memory to run it either, you can quite easily run it from a chroot (you may have to sort dbus out) and assuming the software doesn't require a newer kernel or do silly things with dbus. lsof is handy to shut all the things that have started down after. I've done that before as I had issues getting webm encoding up and running.
