Try Voyage Linux [a], it is a stripped down derivative of Debian.
IIRC Voyage One also has asterisk included.
It comes with an easy to use shell utility that will create a bootable
image on a CF disk and you are good to go!

It works very well on the ALIX and Soekris boards.
